BUILDING
Building 100 (Design Hub)
The Design Hub accommodates the School of Architecture and Design as well as archive, exhibition and studio spaces.
The Design Hub is one of the newest and most iconic of RMIT buildings. Located on the historic Carlton & United Breweries site, it was completed in 2012. Peddle Thorp Architects were involved in its design.
The building was designed to provide a collaborative space across a number of disciplines including design and engineering. Research groups can establish themselves within “warehouses” which are spaces customisable to meet the needs of specific research projects which may span from a few months to a few years. There are also exhibition spaces and a design archive that act as an interface between researchers, the public and industry.
The Design Hub has a number of environmentally sustainable design features and is a Greenstar Certified Project. The most striking aspect of the building is its skin which comprises thousands of sandblasted glass disks, some of which can be tilted to provide shade from the sun as it moves throughout the day. The disks have also been designed with an eye on the future so that they can be retrofitted with solar energy-gathering capacity which could lead to the building powering itself. The building also incorporates strategies for water, waste and recycling management.
