Sign-up for the Casper test
All applicants to initial teacher education programs must complete a selection task assessing non-academic attributes as part of the application process.
Applicants to the following accredited initial teacher education programs at RMIT must sit the Casper test in addition to meeting the academic entry requirements.
- Bachelor of Education
- Bachelor Health, Physical Education and Sport (Secondary)
- Master of Teaching Practice (Primary Education)
- Master of Teaching Practice (Secondary Education)
What is Casper?
Casper is an online, open-response situational judgment test (SJT) which assesses non-cognitive skills and attributes and interpersonal characteristics important in the teaching profession.
The Casper test takes between 90 and 110 minutes to complete. It is comprised of two sections and 14 scenarios:
- Video response section: You will be presented with two word-based and four video-based scenarios. Each scenario contains two open-ended questions. You have one minute to video-record your responses to each of the two questions.
- Typed response section: You will be presented with three word-based and five video-based scenarios. Each scenario contains three open-ended questions, presented altogether. You have five minutes to type your responses to all three questions.
There is an optional ten-minute break between the video response and typed response sections, and another optional five-minute break halfway through the typed response section.
Each response is anonymised and scored by a different rater, giving a robust, reliable, and unbiased view of your personal and professional characteristics important to our teaching programs. Minor grammar and spelling mistakes are not factored into the evaluation of responses.
How do I prepare for Casper?
You do not need to study for Casper. You can familiarise yourself with the structure of the test and view some example scenarios on the Casper website.
In order for you to successfully complete the online Casper test, you will need a computer, stable Internet connection, keyboard, speakers or headphones, microphone and a webcam.
How do I sit Casper?
You need to register for a Casper test on the Casper website. The Casper test fee is $80 and is paid when you register for a test date.
For semester 1 2024 applications, Casper sittings are scheduled on the below dates. Dates and times are subject to change. Please check the Casper website.
If you are applying direct to RMIT you may sit Casper on any of the following dates. If you are applying via VTAC you should check the VTAC deadline for each VTAC round. Regardless of which date you select, it is advisable that you register for the test at least two days beforehand.

How will Casper be used for admission?
You must meet the academic entry requirements for the program you are applying to. Casper is an additional requirement to assess your suitability for teaching and will be considered together with your ATAR or academic results. Entry into teacher education programs at RMIT is competitive and applicants are selected in order of merit.
Casper test results are valid for one admissions cycle (one year). Applicants who have already taken the test for a previous admission cycle will need to re-sit the test for the current year.
Your Casper score will be sent directly to the institutions that you list in your Casper registration. If you do not include RMIT we will not receive your score and will not be able to assess your application. You can add RMIT programs to your distribution list even after you have taken the test.
You will not receive your Casper score, in the same way you would not expect to get “results” for a personal statement.
