The Diploma of Nursing has been designed to help you build knowledge and skills in a practical learning environment. Through on-campus simulation laboratories and industry placements, you'll graduate ready to help others.
There continues to be a high demand for enrolled nurses, and job expectations in this field are strong. In this nationally-accredited diploma, you will gain the skills to help provide acute, curative and rehabilitative care under the direction of a registered nurse.
You’ll learn to work with patients of all ages in different environments. There is a focus on aged care, community, acute care and mental health. You’ll also learn how to administer intravenous medications and gain the skills in acute care, which involves medical and surgical nursing skills.

RMIT provides a blended learning environment that includes face-to-face classes, practical lab sessions, and clinical placement, with some online delivery.
You’ll benefit from a technology-enhanced learning experience using simulation laboratories and a new web-based simulation experience. This combined with a minimum of 400 hours of work placement ensures that you will graduate work ready.
You will be assessed throughout your study in various forms, including online quizzes, case studies, written assignments, class presentations, practical assignments, clinical assessments and more.
The types of classes you have will depend on the course you’re studying. Classes are offered in various formats designed to provide meaningful engagement with staff, industry and peers and provide for access and use of spaces where learning can be applied and active, including an array of specialised equipment.
Most RMIT courses do not include passive large-scale classes such as lectures, instead the content traditionally provided in lectures is made available online. This may be in the form of readings, videos or other on-demand learning materials. This content will also support the basis of interactive learning that takes place in on-campus classes.

You will complete a minimum of 400 hours of clinical placement (equivalent of up to 12 weeks) in metropolitan and rural/regional areas in Victoria.

While undertaking the Diploma of Nursing, students generally attend classes four days per week.
During your first year, you will complete a total of five weeks clinical placement (three- week and a two-week) full-time blocks of clinical placement. In second year, you will complete a further five weeks (two-week and three-week) clinical placement blocks.
During your placement, you can expect to work either morning shifts that start at 7am, or afternoon shifts which finish at 10pm, from Monday to Friday. Students should also prepare to be allocated to placements in rural / regional Victoria, on more than one occasion. Organising and paying for accommodation is an expense incurred by the student

If you have not completed Year 12 (or equivalent), you may choose to sit a Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT) Multiple Choice in order to be considered for this program. Applicants who wish to supplement their academic record may also choose to sit the STAT Multiple Choice. STAT Multiple Choice applicants must meet the eligibility requirements.
You must be at least 18 years of age by the commencement date of the program.

The requirements listed under Additional Information are required both for the completion of the program and for recommendation for registration to AHPRA post qualification. Entry to this program is competitive. Eligible applicants are ranked and selected in order of merit based on their academic achievement, e.g., ATAR, GPA or STAT Multiple Choice (including any adjustments).
There are no prerequisite subjects required for entry into this qualification.

The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) requires all applicants for the Diploma of Nursing to provide evidence of meeting the required English proficiency level prior to entry.
You must complete and submit one of the following options as it relates to your circumstances to show that you meet the English language requirements for entry to the program.
Option 1:
If English is your primary language, you must complete the Declaration of English proficiency form provided within the Selection Task. Your application cannot be considered until your declaration form has been submitted correctly.
Option 2:
If English is not your primary language, then you must meet the required English proficiency level by achieving the minimum results in one of the approved NMBA English language tests. Further details and requirements are provided within the Selection Task and on the NMBA website.
The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) requires all applicants for the Diploma of Nursing to provide evidence of meeting the required English proficiency level prior to entry. See the NMBA website for details.
Applicants can meet the English proficiency level for entry into the program by:
Submitting a declaration that English is your primary language. Primary language can be defined as the language mainly used for reading, writing, listening and speaking and the language best known and most comfortable with.
You must also have attended and satisfactorily completed at least six years of primary and secondary education taught and assessed solely in English. At least two years of this education must have been between grades 7 and 12. This education must have been completed in one or more of the following countries: Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Republic of Ireland, South Africa, United Kingdom, United States of America.
Achieving the minimum English language test results as specified in the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia’s (NMBA) English language skills registration standard.
You must have successfully completed a qualification recognised by RMIT as equivalent to the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) with a minimum average of 50% (see calculator below).
You must be at least 18 years of age by the commencement date of the program.
Equivalent qualifications may also include completion of the RMIT Foundation Studies program or a recognised post secondary diploma in the relevant discipline with the required grades.
Meeting the minimum academic requirements does not guarantee entry. Your application will still need to be assessed and accepted.

Students who are successful in obtaining a place in the program must meet a number of Immunisation and Compliance requirements upon commencement of their studies in the program.
Please note: A full course of immunisations can take up to 7 months to complete, you should contact your medical practitioner prior to entering the program to commence immunisations. It is a requirement that you will have commenced all immunisations and will continue to progress this until completion of the vaccination courses by the deadlines set by the university.
Important: Additional immunisations may be required in response to changes in Government regulations or at the request of the placement host organisation.
You will be required to undertake COVID19 Vaccination as part of this program. Further information will be provided once enrolment has been completed.

You will be required to hold a Victorian Working with Children Check valid for 5 years, prior to undertaking clinical components as part of this program.
Note: For clinical components undertaken interstate a valid Working With Children Check for that state is required.
You will be required to present evidence of a successful National police record check prior to undertaking the clinical components of this program (this is an annual requirement for the duration of your program). Checks are conducted via fit2work. An account with fit2work will be created using your name and your RMIT issued student email address once studies in the program have commenced. Further information will be provided once enrolment has been completed.
Applicants will be required to apply for, and receive an acceptable NDIS Worker Screening Check prior to undertaking professional placement as part of this program.
Mask fit testing is a validated method to independently determine whether a specific make, model and size of mask achieves a proper fit to an individual’s face.
You will be required to present evidence of the completion of a mask fit test (fit test certificate or card), verifying the date of the mask fit test and the recommended respirator make/model specific to the individual student, prior to undertaking the clinical components of this program (this is an annual requirement for the duration of your program).

Credit, recognition of prior learning, professional experience and accreditation from a professional body can reduce the duration of your study by acknowledging your earlier, relevant experience.
Credit and exemptions will be assessed consistent with the principles of the RMIT Credit Policy.
Graduates of the RMIT Diploma of Nursing within the last 10 years and who hold NMBA registration as an Enrolled Nurse are eligible for entry into the Bachelor of Nursing (BP032) with 96 credit points of exemptions (equivalent to 1-year full-time study). The remaining duration in the Bachelor of Nursing is 2 years for the February intake and 2.5 years for the July intake.

When you are submitting an application, please indicate that you want to be considered for credit and provide detailed course syllabus (also known as course outline), outlining volume of learning, course content and weekly topics, learning objectives/outcomes, assessment types and their weightings, and reference to the learning resources such as prescribed textbooks and recommended readings.
When you successfully complete the Diploma of Nursing you may be eligible for entry into the Bachelor of Nursing with 2 semesters of advanced standing (equivalent to 96 credit points).
Applicants for the RMIT Bachelor of Nursing program will be required to meet the English language skills registration standard specified by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA). Completion of the RMIT Diploma of Nursing may no longer meet this standard and applicants may have to submit current English proficiency test results to meet the new requirement.
English proficiency tests must be taken within two years of the bachelor commencement date.
If you have completed the Diploma of Nursing more than 12 months but less than 10 years prior to your Bachelor of Nursing application, you must be registered as an enrolled Nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) and provide of evidence of this in order to qualify for selection and receive full credit.
Alternatively, you may be eligible for entry into other RMIT undergraduate programs.

The Australian Government provides financial assistance via the VET Student Loans scheme, which allows eligible students in eligible programs to defer payment of their tuition fees, up to the maximum loan amount for their program.
If your VET Student Loan application is successful, the Australian Government will pay RMIT your tuition fees on your behalf, up to the maximum loan amount for your program.
Your VET Student Loan becomes part of your VETSL debt. You will start repaying your accumulated VETSL debt to the Australian Government once you earn above the minimum income threshold for repayment, which is adjusted each year (this also applies if you are still studying).
The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) will calculate your compulsory repayment for the year and include this on your income tax notice.
