Cross-institutional – Inbound students

For students enrolled in a degree program at another Australian university or higher education provider who want to study single courses at RMIT.

Apply and enrol

Step 1. Check your eligibility

It’s your responsibility to ensure that you meet the requirements for entry into the course/s you are applying to study as a cross-institutional inbound student. Please search the course/s you want to undertake on RMIT higher education courses.

Your preferred course/s may not be approved if there are insufficient places available.

Cross-institutional enrolment is on a semester-by-semester basis and no guarantee of a subsequent enrolment can be made.

Step 2. Complete and submit the application form

To apply for cross-institutional inbound study:

1. Download and complete all sections of the Application for Cross-Institutional Studies Form (PDF, 526KB) and ensure all signatures have been obtained. Your application for cross-institutional studies must include the approval of your home university. Alternatively, you may provide a letter from your home university that contains the same information required on the form.
2. Submit your completed application form via the Student Connect Portal.

Note: if you wish to undertake courses from the College of Design and Social Context, you need to submit the application before the first day of semester.

Your application will be assessed on submission.

Step 3. Enrol via Enrolment Online

If approved, you'll receive enrolment instructions to your nominated email account on how to enrol online.

You won't be automatically enrolled into your approved course/s. It's your responsibility to access RMIT’s Enrolment Online system and to enrol prior to the relevant deadlines for the relevant semester.

Step 4. Be aware of fees and loans

You will be charged and invoiced by RMIT. Please note that Fees may vary from year to year.

If you currently have a HECS-HELP or FEE-HELP loan with your home institution, you’ll still need to apply for a new HECS-HELP or FEE-HELP loan when you enrol with RMIT. For more loan information, please see HELP Loans and VET Student Loans.

If you would like to take out a loan for the Student services and amenities fee (SSAF), please apply for SA-HELP.

During your cross-institutional studies

Change or cancel your enrolment

If you decide to formally withdraw from all enrolled course/s, you must cancel your program via Enrolment Online. The cancellation must be submitted before the relevant census dates to avoid financial liability and academic penalty.

If you’re enrolled in multiple courses and wish to drop one of them, you can drop via Enrolment Online before the relevant census dates to avoid financial liability and academic penalty.

International students

For international students on a student visa, it’s your responsibility to maintain and meet your visa requirements in any given semester, i.e. maintaining a full-time load to complete within the expected duration in line with the Education Services for Overseas Students ACT 2000.

After your cross-institutional studies

Provide your transcript to your home university

At the end of your course, RMIT will provide you with a digital version of your official academic transcript of results via My eQuals. Once this is received, you should submit a copy to your home university.

Your RMIT student email account and access to RMIT systems will be deactivated shortly after your results are released. Once your account has been deactivated, it will not be possible to reactivate it.

Please take the time to ensure you save all the important information, emails and files you will need when you leave RMIT to avoid any distress or inconvenience.

Cross-study mode

For RMIT on-campus students who want to study courses through RMIT Online, or Open Universities Australia, or vice versa.

Apply and enrol

Step 1. Apply for your cross-study mode courses

Only approved courses undertaken will be credited towards your RMIT award program. To apply for cross-study mode courses:

1. Download and complete the Application for Cross-Study Mode Enrolment Form (PDF, 542KB) and seek out the appropriate approval
2. Submit your completed form via the Student Connect Portal at least 10 working days before the commencement of your studies.

You’ll be notified of the outcome via your student email once your application has been processed. Please check your email regularly for the email as it will contain important information needed to proceed with your enrolment.

Note: onshore international students on a student visa are not eligible to study Open Universities Australia (OUA) or RMIT Online courses. OUA and RMIT Online courses aren’t registered on the Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students (CRICOS). Students studying on a student visa must study with an education provider and in a course that can be found on CRICOS.

Step 2. Enrol via Enrolment Online

When your application has been approved, you’ll receive enrolment instructions to your student email address from Global Enrolment Services, Enrolment and Student Records.

Please note, students changing from face-to-face to online study via OUA will be prompted by Global Enrolment Services to contact an OUA Student Advisor to finalise enrolment within 10 days of your application being sent to OUA. Failure to do so may result in the cancellation of your enrolment.

Step 3. Be aware of fees and loans

If you are an RMIT on-campus student changing to online study via OUA, you will be invoiced and are required to pay the fees to OUA. Please note that you’ll need to pay fees to OUA before you can be enrolled in the approved course.

If you are an RMIT student (changing to online or face-to-face mode, excluding OUA), you’ll be charged tuition fees set by RMIT and required to pay the fees directly to RMIT. The due date of the fees will be stated on your invoice. You may be eligible to defer your fees under FEE-HELP. See FEE-HELP for eligibility requirements.

If you’re studying online via OUA and want to vary or cancel your enrolment, contact an OUA Student Advisor.
