The Ian Howard Memorial Scholarship gives exceptional interior design students the opportunity to experience European furniture design and manufacturing first-hand.
Ian Howard was a distinguished local designer and maker, having established Aristoc Industries, Featherston Interiors, and CoDesign during his lifetime.
Now, a scholarship established in his honour by his son, Paul Howard, is supporting the next generation of designers in exploring their craft and international practices.
In this video, Paul Howard, Director of Melbourne-based commercial office furniture manufacturer, importer, and wholesaler HOW., and scholarship recipient Anh Tran, explain the intent and the impact of this enriching philanthropic partnership.

Well the ANH Howard uh scholarship was created in in honor of my father Ian to celebrate the incredible body of work that he produced during his lifetime so this was his vision to to reach out to the design industry collaborate support work with them and create designs that were enjoyable and required and and somewhat inspirational I think Ian would be very proud of the scholarship he would be absolutely delighted that uh myself and my uh business uh and business partners would carry on the Legacy the scholarship really is around giving someone an opportunity to go overseas and start to kind of understand the world in a new way and um yeah just bring about a sort of broader level of Education to their development as a designer the award is a really fantastic opportunity for us to build stronger relationships with industry so an is a great recipient of this award uh I think she demonstrates a really broad level of capability in her design work the scholarship has changed my perceptions about interior design rather than just being confined within the commercial practice it's allowed me to think about the possibility of design as in the collaboration between Technologies and Furniture Design as well as craftsmanships so I have chance to travel and also meet a lot of people from the industry especially when I visited the factory in Spain and Italy I got to meet um the salese technology development and research department and at at the same time I got to chat have a like very casual chat with the people in the warehouse and see how passionate they are about producing sustainable design so in the Milan exhibition design week I got to see a lot of how people actually in Furniture designer and also interior design exhibition Designer work together and then bring together all the all the elements that I've learned at school the course of interior design at MIT was very inspiring because the different people especially teachers they come from different Industries for example film making um film making music technology and also people from the commercial Practice coming together and teach us about many different things.
