German is one of the most commonly spoken languages in the European Union, and is one of Australia’s community languages.
Learning German will provide you with a deeper insight into a region that plays a vital role in central Europe’s intellectual and economic life and its culture and history. It can also enhance your enjoyment of literature, music, art and philosophy, since German is the language of Goethe, Kafka, Mozart, Bach and Beethoven. German is also important in academia, ranking as the second most commonly used scientific language.
Australia has a large and active German community, providing you with opportunities to practise your German within a social context. To further enrich your learning, you also have the opportunity to spend time in a German-speaking country on exchange.
Course and subject information
You can study German as a minor in the Bachelor of International Studies (Languages) or as an elective in any course.
