Safer Community

Safer Community is RMIT's dedicated service for students and staff, to seek support about experiences of violence, sexual harm, concerning, unwanted, uncomfortable or threatening behaviour.

What is Safer Community?

At RMIT, we are committed to providing a respectful and safe place to study and work.

Safer Community advisors are experienced and trained in supporting students and staff regarding experiences of violence, concerning, inappropriate, unwanted, or threatening behaviour including sexual harassment, harm and violence.

This also includes threats or hate speech, discrimination, assault, stalking, image-based abuse/doxing/catfishing or partner and family violence.

If something has happened to you or someone else or you are feeling uncomfortable or unsafe

Safer Community can

  • Listen to you and talk through what supports are available, including options associated with informal or formal reporting to the university.
  • Provide information and support in how to report directly to police.
  • Provide information and referral to specialist services outside of the university.

Formal reporting to the university

At RMIT we have a dedicated specialist investigator and case manager in the Safer Community team. This person provides personalised support and advocacy for students who wish to make a formal report to the University.

A formal report associated with sexual harassment, harm or violence will be investigated by the specialist investigator. The investigator provides case management of the formal report, which includes documenting of interviews, any findings and will provide recommendations for appropriate disciplinary or associated action to be taken, if allegations or concerns are substantiated

Safer Community checks emails, phone messages and submitted support request forms daily Monday to Friday.

Please note:

We are not an emergency service. If you or others feel at risk or consider the situation to be an emergency, phone 000. If you are on campus, contact Campus Security or use the SafeZone app.

Prevention and Respect at RMIT

At RMIT, we believe everyone should feel safe, respected and valued in their place of study and work. Since 2016 we have strengthened our commitment and action to this and to working nationally with other higher education institutions to tackle the challenges that impact our progress.

We have a dedicated prevention and respect team that works across the whole of university to co-create change and challenge outdated ideas and behaviours that contribute to gender-based violence, sexual harassment, harm and assault.
