The Sir Lawrence Wackett Defence & Aerospace Centre (SLWDAC) supports the transformation and growth of Australia’s defence and aerospace ecosystem. The SLWDAC works with organisations to build globally competitive and sustainable Australian industries by delivering trusted technology, business solutions, and workforce-skills development.
The SLWDAC works closely with the defence sector including the Department of Defence and defence primes and SMEs to deliver high-impact projects and programs. RMIT is also training the next generation of employees in defence, aligned areas such as aerospace, AI, and emerging technologies, thereby contributing to Australia’s future economic success.
In response to Defence and aerospace industry needs to increase the gender diversity of their workforce, the SLWDAC has developed unique training opportunities, sponsored by the Australian Defence Force (ADF), Australian defence industry, and Aviation Aerospace Australia (A/AA).

RMIT has the longest-running Aerospace Engineering and Aviation program in the country, working with industry to train graduates in emerging aerospace, aviation, and multi-disciplinary technologies. Students participate in projects and competitions that demonstrate their skills to potential employers. The Programs provide rewarding experiences for students at all education levels.
RMIT is also a leader in flight-safety and accident-investigation training, partnering with the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) to deliver training and continuing education throughout the Asia-Pacific, raising standards of professionals working in the civilian and military sectors.
RMIT has deep and unique expertise in uncrewed aircraft systems, particularly in designing, testing, and controlling novel aircraft and understanding how these aircraft can cope with the challenges of operations in environments ranging from urban terrain to the stratosphere.
