About the Apple Foundation Program

The Apple Foundation Program at RMIT empowers learners with a future-fit skill set at the intersection of technology, creativity and entrepreneurship. 

You will be introduced to the Swift programming language - a powerful and intuitive programming language for iPhone, iPad, Mac and more - to prototype an original app idea.

In this four week program you will experience the creative process of what it takes to solve real world problems, collaborate in teams in a challenge based learning environment and design apps using the Apple iOS ecosystem.

Building essential skills

This world-class learning and design program offers an overview of the skills to become an iOS developer, while simultaneously introducing you to highly sought-after transferable skills, including: 

  • Design Thinking
  • User Research
  • Prototyping apps and conceptual design
  • User Interface and User Experience design
  • Introduction to Swift coding
  • Introduction to Xcode
  • Storytelling
  • Presentation and pitching of ideas
The RMIT Apple Foundation Program is an immersive, challenge-based learning opportunity for learners to experience what it really means to design and develop an app, learn Design Thinking principles and gain hands-on practice with the intuitive Swift programming environment. By targeting learners from underrepresented groups, we hope to both broaden the pool of talent in the tech sector and increase the diversity of that talent pool.

Program details

The Apple Foundation Program at RMIT is open to a broad range of cohort groups, spanning current high school students, existing RMIT students who may be interested in further study in this field, retraining professionals looking for a change in career and women who are interested in exploring career options in STEM.

What you need to know

  • The RMIT Apple Foundation Program is free
  • All applicants must be over the age of 16
  • All applicants must reside in Australia
  • No prior coding knowledge, skills or experience is required, but previous knowledge is welcomed
  • The program runs for four weeks, five days a week and four hours per day
  • If successful in gaining a place in the program, you must be able to commit to be on-site at RMIT University Melbourne for the duration of the program dates and timeframe
  • A MacBook and iPhone device will be loaned to all participating students

How to apply

Entry to the RMIT Apple Foundation Program is competitive because we can only accept up to 30 participating learners at a time and we will use the selection task to help assist us with final group selection.

In addition to your online application you will need to answer the following selection task in order to be considered for a place in the program:

  • Tell us about something that you learnt recently and how you learnt it?

You have the freedom to complete this task however you wish, whether a collage, illustration, short video (no more than 30 seconds) or written response – the sky is the limit, so be creative and most importantly, have fun! We look forward to seeing your applications!

Beck Storer

With over 20 years experience in the communication design industry, Beck is an RMIT Alumni with a Masters in Design and is the founder of The Cutaway, a creative studio that explores cultural storytelling in the public space. A driver for challenging the way we see design and its role in our world, she shares everything she knows as a leader in industry led design education and has lectured and developed post graduate design courses in the Australian academic environment.

With over 7 years at Apple perfecting her craft in the Apple Ecosystem, devices, and software, Steph has a strong focus on user experience. She believes that technology has the power to enrich lives and create an inclusive environment that empowers individuals to achieve their full potential, and is committed to inspiring students to think creatively, leveraging Apple technology to make a difference.
