The Retail Initiative is helping our students succeed in industry

Year-long project The Retail Initiative (TRI) is a creative partnership between key Australian retailers and RMIT students from the Associate Degree in Fashion and Textile Merchandising.

The project gives hundreds of students each year the tools to explore the future of fashion through market research, trend forecasting, visual merchandising and product design.

Over the year-long project, students are grouped to work with one industry partner, for whom they must plan and design a range of products, including apparel and homewares.

What's next... for Fashion Tech

Sophie Lavis, who studied the Associate Degree in Fashion Design and Technology, was recently selected as the winning designer of a female-focused AFL accessory range.

“To have the chance to see my designs come to life is a dream come true,” she said.

The new range has been produced in Melbourne from 100% Australian Merino wool sourced from communities across the country as part of the Fibre of Football campaign, which celebrates the rich heritage connecting the Australian wool industry and Australian Football.
